Creating A Dialup Connection (Win 95/98)
Setting up Dial-up Networking
manually
Step 1: Install the Dial-Up Networking
Note: Be sure to have the Windows98 CD in the drive. If Dial-up Networking is already
installed, skip to Step 2.
- Click on "Start", then "Settings", and chose "Control Panel".
- Double-click on "Add/Remove Programs".
- Click on the "Windows Setup" tab.
- Click on "Communications", then "Details".
- Check the checkbox that says "Dial-up Networking".
- Click "OK", then click "OK" again.
- Windows 98 will then install Dial-Up Networking.
Step 2: Setup TCP/IP
Note: If TCP/IP is already installed, skip to Step 3.
- Click on "Start", then "Settings", and chose "Control Panel".
- Double-click on "Network".
- Look in the box labeled "The Following Network Components are Installed". Check to see if you have either "TCP/IP" or "TCP/IP - Dial Up Adapter" already listed in the box. If you do, you can skip to Step 3. If there is no listing for either "TCP/IP" or "TCP/IP - Dial Up Adapter", proceed to the next step. Note: A very common bug is to have TCP/IP installed more than once. If you have done this, remove all TCP/IP entries. You remove an entry by highlighting it and hitting the 'Remove' button. Once all TCP/IP entries have been deleted, add a single one.
- Click on "Add", then "Protocol", and then "Add".
- Select "Microsoft" as the manufacturer, then "TCP/IP" as the protocol.
- Click "OK", "OK", and then "OK" again.
- Windows 98 will then add TCP/IP.
Note: You might be asked to provide computer and workgroup names at this point. If so, click on the identification tab at the top of the screen, type in your last name for the computer name, 'workgroup' for workgroup, and 'computer' for computer description. Then hit OK.
- Double-click on the "My Computer" icon.
- Double-click on "Dial-up Networking".
- Double-click on "Make New Connection".
- Remove the words "My Connection" and type "Primus" in that box. Click "Next".
- Depending on your location, enter the correct phone number
- Click "Next".
- Click "Finish".
- Click on the "Primus" icon with the right mouse button and select "Properties".
- Remove checkmark from 'Use country code and area code'.
- Click on the "Server Types" button.
- Make sure that the "Type of Dial-Up Server" is "PPP: Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0, Internet...".
- Under "Advanced Options", remove the check next to "Log onto Network".
- Under "Allowed Network Protocols", remove the check next to "NetBEUI" and "IPX/SPX Compatible Protocol".
- Click "OK" button.
- Click "OK" button.
