Creating A Dialup Connection (Apple/Mac)
Choose your method:
- Configuring using Remote Access and TCP/IP
- Configuring using FreePPP 2.6.x and TCP/IP
- Configuring using FreePPP 2.6.x and MacTCP
- Configuring using FreePPP 2.5.x and TCP/IP

Configuring using Remote Access and TCP/IP for the Mac
Step 1. Configuring TCP/IP
- Click on the Apple menu, move down to "Control Panels", then select "TCP/IP".
- Ensure that Connect via "PPP". Set Configure to Using PPP server. The next three options (IP Address, Subnet mask, Router address) will automatically change themselves to "Will be supplied by server".
- Close the panel by clicking on the upper left-hand corner. The computer will ask you if you want to save your changes. Click on "OK".
- Click on the Apple menu, go to "Control Panels", then open the "Modem" control panel.
- Set "Connect via" to "Modem Port".
- Select your modem from the pull down list. If your modem is not in the list, select the model closest to your own.
- Sound can be on or off depending on if you want to hear the modem dialing. Dialing should be set to either tone or pulse depending on your type of phone line.
- Close the Modem control panel.
- Click on the Apple menu, go to "Control Panels", then open the "Remote Access".
- Ensure that "Registered User" is turned on.
- Depending on your location, use one of the following dial-in numbers. If you have call-waiting, add "*70," before the number. If you do not have to dial the area code to connect, do not enter it.
- Enter your username (full email address, ex: ) and password in the boxes provided.
- Click on the "Redialing" tab.
- Set "Redial" to "Redial Main number only".
- Click on the "Connection" tab.
- Turn on "Connect Automatically when starting TCP/IP applications" and "Disconnect if Idle for 10 minutes". You may increase or decrease the 10 minute time limit if you desire.
- Click on the Protocol tab.
- Both "Allow error correction and compression in modem" and "Use TCP header compression" should be on. "Connect to a command-line host" should be off. Ignore the rest of the options on this screen and click on "OK".
- To connect to Primus, click on the "Connect" button.
Configuring using FreePPP 2.6.x and TCP/IP for the Mac
Step 1. Configuring TCP/IP

- Ensure that Connect via "PPP". Set Configure to Using PPP server. The next three options (IP Address, Subnet mask, Router address) will automatically change themselves to "Will be supplied by server".

- Launch FreePPP Setup.
- In the upper left-hand corner of this window, you will see a small icon of a phone & globe. Ensure that the arrow beneath it is turned downward.
- You should now see a total of four tabs on the screen: "General", "Accounts", "Locations", and "Modems". Click on the "General" tab.
- Ensure that the following three items are checked ON: "Allow applications to open connection", "Disconnect if idle for 15 minutes", and "Show alerts during connect & disconnect".
- Now click on the "Accounts" tab. Create a new account by clicking on "New".
- Another window with 3 tabs should appear. Click on the "Account" tab.
- Set the account name to "Primus".
- Set "Connect" to "Directly".
- Enter your username (full email address, ex: ) and password in the boxes provided.
- Click on the "Dialup" tab.
- Depending on your location, use one of the following dial-in numbers. If you have call-waiting, add "*70," before the number. If you do not have to dial the area code to connect, do not enter it.
- Ignore all other fields in this window, and also ignore the "Options" tab. Click on "OK".
- You will now be brought back to the original FreePPP screen with the phone/globe icon in the upper left corner. Ensure that "Connect" to is set to "Primus", and "From" is set to "Home".
- To dial in to Primus, click on the "Connect" button.
Configuring using FreePPP 2.6.x and TCP/IP for the Mac
Step 1. Configuring MacTCP
- Click on the Apple menu, select "Control Panels", then "MacTCP".
- In the window that appears, ensure that the "PPP" (or "FreePPP") icon in the window is shaded by clicking on it once (if you do not see any icon labeled PPP or FreePPP, then you are missing software). Once the icon is darkened, select More at the bottom.
- Ensure that the "Gateway Address" (in the lower left of the window) is set to "0.0.0.0". If so, skip to step 5.
- In the upper left-hand corner under "Obtain Address", select "Manually". Under "Gateway Address", erase any previous entries and enter "0.0.0.0". Change "Manual" back to "Server".
- Ensure that the "Class" (upper right hand corner) is set to "C". Do not attempt to change any of the settings beneath it.
- Click on "OK". You will now be returned to the first MacTCP screen.
- Close MacTCP.
- Click on the Apple menu, go to "Control Panels", then open the "Modem" control panel.
- Set "Connect via" to "Modem Port".
- Select your modem from the pull down list. If your modem is not in the list, select the model closest to your own.

Configuring using FreePPP 2.5.x and TCP/IP for the Mac

- Set the server name to "Primus".
- Depending on your location, use one of the following dial-in numbers. If you have call-waiting, add "*70," before the number. If you do not have to dial the area code to connect, do not enter it.
- Set Connect to Directly.
- Enter your username (full email address, ex: ) and password in the boxes provided.
- Click on the "Connection" tab.
- Set Port speed according to the speed of your modem. If you have a 14400, set the speed to 19200. If you have a 28800 or a 33600, set the speed to 38400. If you have a x2 or K56flex modem, set the port speed to 57600.
- Set flow control to "CTS & RTS (DTR)". Click on "OK".
- You will now be brought back to the original FreePPP screen with the phone/globe icon in the upper left corner. Ensure that "Connect to" is set to "Primus", and "From" is set to "Home".
- To dial in to Primus, click on the "Connect" button.
Configuring using FreePPP 2.5.x and TCP/IP for the Mac
Step 1. Configuring MacTCP
- Click on the Apple menu, select "Control Panels", then "MacTCP".

- Set Connect to Directly.
- Enter your username (full email address, ex: ) and password in the boxes provided.
- Click on the "Connection" tab.
- Set Port speed according to the speed of your modem. If you have a 14400, set the speed to 19200. If you have a 28800 or a 33600, set the speed to 38400. If you have a x2 or K56flex modem, set the port speed to 57600.
- Set flow control to "CTS & RTS (DTR)". Click on "OK".

Configuring using ConfigPPP and MacTCP
Step 1. Configuring MacTCP
- Click on the Apple menu, select "Control Panels", then "MacTCP".

- Click on the Apple menu, select "Control Panels", and then choose "ConfigPPP".
- Set the "Port name" to Modem port or Printer port, depending on how your modem is hooked up to your computer.
- Set "Idle timeout" to 15 minutes and "Echo interval" to off.
- Both "Disable auto connect" and "Terminal window" should be unchecked.
- "Hang-up on close" should be checked on, as well as "Quiet mode".
- Click on the "Config" button on the lower left.
- Enter Primus as the "PPP server name".
- Set "Port speed" according to the speed of your modem. If you have a 14400, set the speed to 19200. If you have a 28800 or a 33600, set the speed to 38400. If you have a x2 or K56flex modem, set the port speed to 57600.
- Set "Flow control" to "CTS & RTS (DTR)". If your phone line is touch-tone based, turn on Tone dial, else turn on Pulse dial.
- Depending on your location, use one of the following dial-in numbers. If you have call-waiting, add "*70," before the number. If you do not have to dial the area code to connect, do not enter it.
- Enter your modem's initialization string in the Modem init box. If you don't know the correct string for your modem, enter AT&F1. Set "Modem connect timeout" to 90 seconds.
- Now click on the "Authentication" button at the bottom. In the field labeled "Auth. ID", enter your username (full email address, ex: jsmith@primus.ca) followed by ".ppp", all in lowercase. Enter your password in the box provided.
- Set "Retries" to 10 and "Timeout" to 10.
- Click on "OK", then "Done", then close the panel.
- In order to connect to Primus, open up ConfigPPP, and then click on the "Open" button.
